That was really cool, especially being an original fan. ![]() Seeing how they put all that together, the makeup and how they made it look so real on-screen. Napoleon: I think for me, it was the walkers. Walking into that scale of a place and all the stuff that went into that set was one of the core things that I've experienced on a set.Ĭharles: I think filming at Liberty State Parks, the Statue of Liberty park. That was my character's sort of main base. Ivanek: Walking into the Meadowlands Arena for the first time. Was there any small detail about the set or script that you guys were really surprised or excited about when you started filming? It would be cool for the fans to see which side each character is on and who they trust more. Napoleon: All of our characters have different perspectives on Maggie and Negan. That's really helpful in looking at these scripts and figuring out where the focus is going to be. The world is the background and the characters are the foreground. ![]() You get pulled in by those characters, their relationships, and how they navigate this world. That's what this show is." What I saw very, very early on was that it's a character show. Ivanek: When I finally went to watch, I went into it thinking, "This is a concept show. Since my character was born in the apocalyptic world, it was much easier to understand the walkers, and everything Gaius said. Napoleon: It was a great help knowing the storyline of Maggie and Negan. ![]() It was kind of understanding the foundational elements of and reestablishing them in our show, but then using it as a jumping off point to hopefully do a little something different. I feel like even with all the different iterations of The Walking Dead, those core themes and elements of family, survival, and the walkers obviously, just carry over. I was wondering if or how you all used that series to serve as a way to inform coming into this world and building your characters?Ĭharles: For me, it was really just understanding the core themes of the show and how those core themes or elements carry over. Gaius and Mahina, you both said you'd watched The Walking Dead before. Lauren and Jeffrey played a big part in that. But as the episodes went on, it came easier. Because dialogue normally helps the scene flow more. They helped me get the emotion that I needed to bring out in my character. Napoleon: It was difficult, but Lauren and Jeffrey definitely helped me with that. How did you navigate her character and her relationships without the use of dialogue? Mahina, you're in an interesting position because Ginny doesn't talk throughout the series. His way of going about that just means a lot of other people pay a very high price. Everybody in this crazy fighting world is looking for some sense of home and safety. How do you go about that? Because a lot of the characters are looking for that in the show. The scary part is the price he's willing to pay - let other people pay for that. He sees himself as recreating what Negan built years before. He sees himself as creating a home for people. He's not out to be a dictator or to be evil. Ivanek: I think he sees himself as a protector at the end of the day. ![]()
